Obituary for Sandra Andrews

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our dear mother, Sandra (Sandy) Mae Andrews on August 23, 2019. She was the second child born to Peter and Mae Rivers on April 19, 1938, and raised in Chepachet, R.I.

She met and married Russell Andrews, Sr., the love of her life at age 18 and had four children. They were together for more than 38 years when he preceded her in death at age 56.

Sandy lived a full life as a wife, mother, and valued team member on the job. She worked tirelessly as a laborer at Knox Glass, a Nurse's Aide at several Nursing Homes, Manager of a staff at Frito Lay, and ultimately retired as a Pit Boss at Foxwood's Resort & Casino.

She achieved her entrepreneurial dream at a young age by opening a yarn shop with Russ, offering everything from knitting needles to pattern books. She taught several classes in knitting and crocheting. Wrapping up in front of the TV on a cold winter's day in one of her handmade afghans provided us with warmth and comfort.

Sandy was a wonderful cook and took pride in preparing meals for her family. She received accolades at family cookouts for her delicious chowder and clam cakes. The rich smells from her tomato soup, pasta sauce and Whoopie-Pies would fill the house and welcome us home after school. She had a green thumb in her garden and would incorporate her fresh vegetables into her savory dishes.

She was the beloved mother of Dean Andrews, Debra Marshall, Lisa Hady, and Russell Andrews, Jr. Often referred to as "Ma", or "Mrs. Mouse" by neighborhood kids, she could be found on a baseball field, at a hockey rink, or behind the scenes for the high school dance show supporting her children. She was a grandmother to six grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was an avid reader of books, knowledgeable on many topics, a devout Red Sox fan, enjoyed coffee, and was an animal lover of dogs, cats, and birds.

Sandy is survived by her daughter Lisa and son Russ, her sister, Patricia Hopkins, nephew Bruce Hopkins, niece Barbara Weaver. She is also survived by brother in-laws Ernie and Jon, sister in-laws Janet, Joan and Joyce, with 15 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russ, son Dean, daughter Debra, grandchildren Samantha and Trevor, brother-in-law Wayne, nephew Steven, and her sister in-law and confidant, Eve.
Sandy will be missed terribly and thought of often.

At Sandy's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, and as an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the CT Humane Society at 701 Russell Rd., Newington, CT 06111
